There are few more enjoyable ways to spend an evening than engaging in a multiplayer battle of wits with your friends on PlayStation 4. Whether it be going head-to-head in a FIFA El Clásico or collaborating in a Team Deathmatch on Call of Duty, each group of mates has their go-to PS4 multiplayer games. Also, with the graphics and complexity of today’s games pushing the boundaries of the virtual, players can now relish in a fully immersive and insanely realistic cooperative experience. But which PS4 titles represent the best there is in terms of multiplayer action? We take a look below.
Call of Duty: Black Ops III
One of gaming’s most iconic franchises, Call of Duty has harnessed the inner soldier in all of us for almost 15 years. Originally a World War II first-person shooter, it has gradually incorporated an array of additional time periods whilst building a reputation as one of PlayStation’s pre-eminent multiplayer games.
The release of Black Ops III on PS4 in November 2015 added an extra dimension to the franchise’s multiplayer prowess. Set in a 21st-century Cold War, the campaign is no longer limited to single player – it has been opened up to both four-player online co-op and two-player split screen. This means that, as well as the usual online and zombie multiplayer game modes, players can work through the campaign collaboratively.
Pure Hold ‘Em
Although of a lesser calibre than some of PS4’s big-hitting franchises, Pure Hold ‘Em is certainly no less gripping than its counterpart titles, albeit for different reasons. Far removed from the fast-paced action of a first-person shooter, this game focuses on skill, nerve, and determination, with players competing with friends at the world’s most popular variation of poker.
With the ability to create a tournament involving up to eight friends, Pure Hold ‘Em is most definitely one of PS4’s most enjoyable multiplayer games. Aside from this particular title, there are plenty of other ways to play Texas Hold ‘Em poker for those who just cannot get enough.
FIFA 17
Akin to Call of Duty in its popularity, the FIFA football franchise has been a mainstay in the gaming world since the ‘90s. Allowing players to take the reins at their favourite club or control their footballing idols on the pitch, FIFA brings out the football fan (and wannabe player) in so many people. And, as is typical of competition sport, it makes for an epic multiplayer experience.
Giving friends the opportunity to play against each other directly in Kick Off is just one of the classic features that FIFA 17 predictably includes. Enhanced graphics and a new game engine make the franchise’s latest instalment its best yet, and other multiplayer game modes such as Ultimate Team and Seasons have benefited from the customary annual improvements.
Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris
Is the name ‘Lara Croft’ prompting joyous flashbacks of yesteryear’s gaming? Well, you’re not the only one. Tomb Raider was undoubtedly an action-adventure favourite back in the day, but the release of Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris marked a significant foray into the multiplayer world for the franchise.
Now, PS4 players can navigate the deserts of Egypt as one of four characters, with the possibility of having your mates as the other three. This has greatly enhanced the appeal of the game amongst multiplayer enthusiasts and makes for great fun when collaborating with friends.
Rocket League
Possibly the most chaotic and random game on PS4, Rocket League is every bit as fun as it is crazy. In a bizarre embodiment of ‘car football’, you control a rocket-powered vehicle and battle against other similarly rocket-powered vehicles, attempting to score more goals than the opposition. Oh, and did I mention that this all takes place inside a giant dome?
Whacky beyond belief, Rocket League is awesome fun to play with friends. Multiplayer game modes are available both offline and online, and it’s extremely easy to pick up. If you haven’t already, give Rocket League a go next time you and your mates play PS4 together.
Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End
Following the adventures of veteran explorer Nathan Drake, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End is known primarily amongst PS4 players for its single-player story mode. Despite this, a competitive multiplayer mode is available, in which players play as different characters from the Uncharted series.
Called Survival, this co-op game mode lets you and your friends fight alongside each other. But there is more to it than just scything down waves of enemies – you are given special objectives, as well as the ability to rank up and unlock new weapons. Far from one-dimensional then, Uncharted 4 is definitely one to add to your PS4 multiplayer list.
