Our Top 15 PS4 Games of 2014

Let’s cut straight to the chase here… You most likely purchased a shiny new PlayStation 4 console for one reason – to load up the absolute best games available for it, right? In anticipation of this, we’ve put together a list of our top 10 PS4 games of 2014. Anyway, without further ado, let’s jump right in.

The Last of Us Remastered

This PlayStation exclusive is first on our list for a number of reasons. Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us is a survival horror experience which tells the tale of two seemingly disparate sidekicks who end up becoming ensnared together for the sake of staying alive.   Of course, it’s so much more than that. It’s also one of the best zombie-themed games out there and has won all sorts of accolades from critics and gamers alike. The graphics are amazing, and you’ll find it hard to find a game that follows such an interesting, compelling and emotionally engaging storyline. This title is a must have for all PS4 owners.

Grand Theft Auto V

Grand Theft Auto V new-gen has lived up to the high expectations many had set. We wanted better graphics and a first-person mode, and this is what we got. This game should be owned by all PS4 gamers, what’s more is that the game never really gets old or boring thanks to the vast amount of things you’re able to do. The action online is great fun and it has got everything that an award winning game should have.

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare

In a way, we all knew that Advanced Warfare was going to be exactly what it is – an amazing and dynamic first-person shooter bonanza. At the same time, seeing the controls become smoother and more refined, menus changing, new features being added, the graphics quality improving, etc…it’s not without precedent, you see.   This time around, things are taking a turn toward the future, leaving our current era in the dust. Similarly, the action itself is also becoming more frantic, it would seem. Needless to say, if you want a game that pretty much does everything you could want or need a first-person game focused on war drama narratives and multiplayer experiences, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare is the ticket…

Wolfenstein: The New Order

This game perhaps isn’t one that many gamers would instantly think would appear in the top 5 best PS4 games of 2014, however, there are plenty of reasons why we’ve placed it at number 4. This game tackles a storyline that you’ll struggle to find in many other first person shooters. It takes on the past with futuristic weapons, and it works extremely well. The graphics gave us an early example of just what the PS4 can offer visually. The storyline is what this game is all about, just like The Last of Us, and it’s excellent. If you like first-person-shooters and a good, progressive storyline then this is one to get.

Far Cry 4

Building on the basic formula we saw emerge out of Far Cry 3, numero 4 here actually manages to up the ante and refine everything a few steps further in nearly every direction. Now, don’t get me wrong, FC3 was great – definitely a game that is still pretty amazing and obviously, tones of fun. However, FC4 manages to neatly mix the distance between the plot and open world mechanics in such a way that just feels better. Not only that, but the world looks better, more exotic and nearly everywhere you turn there’s something unique and cool to discover. Likewise, there’s always another animal ready to try to kill you as well. Anyone who even remotely claims to like action FPS sandboxes NEEDS to check this one out, pronto.

Diablo III: Ultimate Evil Edition

While Diablo might be fun to play on PC, you might say that it really didn’t get its fully appreciation from the general gamer pool until Diablo III landed on consoles. It offers up real-time combat that’s based on relatively familiar mechanics of course, although doing so within the context of a semi-open world RPG of sorts. This Ultimate Evil Edition pairs the main game with an add-on, Reaper of Souls, which is the first expansion pack from Blizzard Entertainment.

LittleBigPlanet 3

If you’re the creative type, or love puzzles, then this is a title that should be in your game collection. Of course, this is another PlayStation exclusive, which means you won’t find it on any competitor platform. The distinctive Sackboy is the main featured character, however, three new characters are also introduced with LBP3. This title will please specific gamers who like this type of genre.

FIFA 15

FIFA 15 was released with plenty of anticipation that it would excel from FIFA 14’s offering. Whilst we didn’t see too much new, which annoyed quite a few fans, the fact of the matter is that you won’t find a better soccer / football title on the PS4 right now. Yes, you can get PES 15, which is also a great game, but you don’t get to play with the real kits and club names which takes away a large amount of realism. This is a very good title and one of the best sports titles released this year on PS4.

Destiny

Met with critical division (some people immediately “getting” what Destiny is all about and loving it, others eschewing it entirely), Bungie’s new MMORPG Sci-fi shooter franchise is winning hearts as well as shaking things up amongst some in the crowd. What’s really interesting about this game though, aside from its wonderful graphics, gameplay and RPG-laden mechanics, is the fact that even those that might claim to dislike the game are often found continuously playing it.

Infamous: Second Son

Right away, you’ll notice that in Infamous: Second Son the true purpose of the game is to basically allow you to play “super hero” in a great-looking sandbox. Likewise, the premise is pretty solid, with a story that requires you to make certain choices which end up influencing the course the game takes. Aside from that, it really just makes a visual impact on you, which is definitely important to say the least.

Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee – New ‘n’ Tasty

If you owned a PS1 or PS2 then you’ll probably remember playing this game franchise. Our good old pal, Abe, is back and what’s great is that you get to play this title in 3D thanks to the PS4. If you aren’t familiar with the game then you should note that the gameplay is centred on Abe, who is a floor cleaner at RaptureFarms. One night, Abe overhears the owner of RaptureFarms horrifying secret new plans, which is to turn him and all of the other workers into Tasty Treats. Abe’s mission is to alert and rescue his co-workers and escape. If you like an adventure then this should be in your collection, this game is worth the buy just for the nostalgia value – it really takes you back to the original PS1 release.

Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor

There have been some definite hits and misses with the LOTR franchise when it comes to videogames, of that we should all be able to agree upon. However, with Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor, we have what is arguably the best LOTR title ever released to date. For starters it’s an open world RPG with actual intricate mechanics and a more realized battling system. Those factors alone should make it worth your time, but that’s not all it has…there’s also the story / plot, which is built off of characters and events that are supposed to be residing in the same Tolkien-esque universe.

If you’re bored with the mainstream game genres and want something somewhat different, then Flower is a game that fits the bill. Flower’s gameplay involves a poetic adventure, where the player controls the wind using the controller (with movement), and guiding petals through the sky. This game is vastly different from your typical genres and it’s full of colour and certainly offers a relaxing experience.

Alien: Isolation

All you need to know about this largely evasion-based survival horror title is that it makes use of great graphics, the Ridley Scott “Alien” franchise and actually manages to be scary more often than not. You are tasked with a series of situations which must be surmounted in order to achieve your goal(s), of course this will all require careful navigation as well as split-second decision-making skills. Knowing when to jump inside a locker to avoid being seen by a giant, lumbering Xenomorph is a trait worth possessing in this game.

The Evil Within

Taking the formulae devised throughout the Resident Evil series and turning it on its head with even more engrossing action as well as scarier horror elements, “The Evil Within” is definitely a must-play freaky title. Strange games like this have been a mainstay to the PlayStation brand since the days of the PS1 too, so it’s actually quite nice to see the genre finally get its own 8^th generation Shinji Mikami title. It’s basically a mish-mash of all sorts of gameplay concepts, although instead of being randomly applied they are expertly chiseled out from amongst the other existing concepts.
