If you were to rewind a few years, many people in the UK wouldn’t have even knew what ‘Black Friday’ actually was. In 2013, a number of stores decided to take part in the event, due to its success, this year has seen the majority of high-street retailers use ‘Black Friday’ as a marketing tool to get people rushing to the stores.
Black Friday originally started as a US tradition, the day following Thanks Giving; generally branded as the start of the Christmas shopping season. It has recently caught on in a number of countries, probably thanks to the recession and money-hungry retailers. Black Friday could be defined as the early version of what common wealth countries call Boxing Day – the day after Christmas, where you’ll find people rushing out to the shops for discounted products.
Was it all hype, or could you actually grab a bargain? We hit the streets to find out. Many stores were offering fantastic deals on HDTVs – Sainsbuy’s were offering a 32-inch (basic brand) HDTV for just £79.99 and were out of stock very quickly, the above picture taken at an ASDA supermarket in the UK. This was the product that many were so excited about. What about the PS4? Well, you couldn’t get one for £79.99! However, the majority of UK retailers slashed the price of the PS4 to £299.99 – some throwing in a number of games for free too. The question is, was it all worth rushing out for? Probably not. Amazon are offering an extended ‘Black Friday’ deal with the PS4 along with the downloadable version of The Last of Us for £299.99 here until the 1st of December – the best part is you don’t encounter crazy shoppers or car parking tickets.
Will Black Friday be a regular in the UK calendar, or is this just a fad? We think it’s here to stay. Probably stimulated due to the recession, however, who doesn’t love seeing the price of their retail favourites lowered thanks to a 24-hour retail price war? Seeing the price of the PS4 drop is always a great thing – get prepared for next year!
