Sony, like its competitors, has always sought to be named the company with the best and most impressive technology available. While Nintendo was releasing the GameBoy Advance SP, and the handheld systems that followed, Sony tried to compete with the less-popular PSP and PlayStation Vita. Motion technology such as the Nintendo Wii and the Xbox Kinect prompted Sony to create the PlayStation Eye in order to keep up. Now, with the imminent release of the Oculus Rift, a virtual reality headset designed to work with Microsoft consoles and computers, Sony has announced that their own virtual reality headset will also…

PES has long been competing with the FIFA series to be named the better game, and in many ways, it’s succeeded. Critics praise the graphics in PES 2016, the realistic physics system, and the smooth controls that help create an interesting, immersive playing experience. Compared to FIFA’s outdated and only minimally changed system, PES reigns supreme. But in many people’s opinion, where PES falls short is in licensing. FIFA has always held a monopoly on licenses, and PES has been struggling to make up for it. A lot of FIFA’s appeal has come from the fact that it has the…

Tearaway Unfolded, from developers Media Molecules, is perhaps best described as a tribute to paper in all of its folding, tearable, pretty origami-style forms, but please bear with me as I’m aware that this description doesn’t necessarily make you jump for joy and glee and excitement. It should though, and if you’ll give me just a minute I’ll explain why… The astute amongst you may have noted already that this incarnation of the game takes as its basis the “Tearaway” game which was released for Vita in 2013. It was lauded then, and it should indeed be lauded now. The…

Mad Max, who hasn’t heard of it or indeed him? The name is undoubtedly familiar, but it’s worth stating at the outset that ‘Max’ of the movie is not necessarily exactly replicated here, at least, the game isn’t directly based on the films, choosing instead to follow its own path. This may be surprising, given the recent success of Fury Road, but there it is – I’ve mentioned it good and early for you so if you’re paying attention you won’t be surprised. The aim of this game is simple – Max needs to get himself a car which will…

It doesn’t have a particularly exciting name, does it, but I guess it does inform you pretty quickly what the game’s about – The Golf Club: Collector’s Edition has as its central focus on golf. Is the gameplay provided in this simulator any better than the title? For better or worse, the developers of The Golf Club have provided you with as authentic a reproduction of the good ol’ game of golf as they could muster. This means, for example that it’s not possible to adjust the trajectory of the ball once it’s in the air as with other golf…

Video games are one of the best mediums for telling stories, and the games that can combine fun gameplay with a compelling story make for unforgettable experiences that you’ll be replaying for years to come. The PS4 already has quite a few of these games, five of which are listed here: Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag The “Assassin’s Creed” series has always been full of fun historical fiction, and “Black Flag” is no different… well, in a way it is a little different, because it’s a lot better than any of the “AC” stories to come before it. You play…

is colourful, Japanese-anime at its finest, combining the joy of the Dynasty Warriors franchise with the best of the existing One Piece formulae. Essentially, your aim is to kill literally thousands of bad guys but don’t worry – they’re not very bright or sophisticated bad guys so you may not find this too troublesome. Every so often you may get chucked a more challenging bozo to deal with, just to keep it interesting and make sure you stay on your toes. With this one, however, you may simply be aiming to stay alive and amass as high a score as…

Doesn’t it sound like fun to play in a game where you get to be known as Big Boss?  No further details needed, surely? Oh, go on then, what else is there to know about Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (what an awesome title)? As Big Boss, you’re the leader of a private military contractor organisation who takes on ‘freelance’ contracts ranging from rescuing prisoners of war in Russia, to blowing up strategic military assets on behalf of world leaders.  Big Boss isn’t particularly bothered about ethics or morality – if the request comes in, generally it will…

Calling absolutely anything the ‘definitive edition’ is risky, no matter the context. Still, in an age where many gaming corporations are risk averse and would prefer to repackage previous hits than gamble on completely new and untested games, re-releasing the BAFTA-winning Arkane Studios’ and Bethseda Softworks’ hit of 2012 with the added promise of calling it the definitive edition is a grand promise indeed. What have they done to this already hugely popular, successful and critically acclaimed game? And, one feels the need to ask, why could they not have added these things on first time around? The original version,…

Indie games keep the industry on its toes, as far as I’m concerned. We’ve seen a recent surge in indie games in the gaming sphere. There’s a lot more freedom awarded to indie game designers who are able to take a concept and really turn it into something unique. They don’t have to cater to their hot shot CEO’s because there very rarely is anyone to answer to at all. It’s a luxury most game designers would kill for. With this new found creative freedom, designers have started putting out some really amazing games. This article will outline five of…
