There have been some really interesting PS4 titles released this year, most of them being somewhat off the beaten path in terms of concept or style of execution.  Well, in July and August there are some more shooters, sports, action and strategy games headed our way, including a few offerings that should delight those who might be looking for more conventional 3D gameplay.  Moreover, because the general numbers of releases for both months is rather light, we’ve decided to smash them together for good measure.  Anyway, without further ado here’s what you have to soon look forward to… Sniper Elite…

The “Worms” franchise, perpetually developed by Team 17, kind of went off the rails for a bit with their various 3D experiments.  Sure, offerings like Worms 3D and others weren’t bad (actually quite good in a different way), but they just didn’t feel like true “Worms” titles due to a lack of 2D design, among other things.  To put it bluntly, “Worms Battlegrounds” changes all of that and brings back the classic interface that fans of the series have long been familiar with.  However, instead of rehashing older systems they’ve put together a shiny new graphically impressive one.  In short,…

Titan Books is one of the more well-known producers of graphic art novels for anime, film and video games and they tend to deliver the goods for their core audience time and time again.  With “The Art of Watch Dogs”, authors Andy McVittie and Paul Davies has more or less expertly laid out the visual cues and driving forces which ultimately helped to create Ubisoft’s amazing sandbox title, “Watch Dogs”. Those who might be expecting an avalanche of 2D concept art, like what is found in many of Titan’s other offerings might be a bit disappointed.  Because there was obviously…

Ubisoft’s newest release, Watch Dogs, is already stirring up some buzz. It is an open world third-person action game that centers around grey hat hacker Aiden Pearce, who is on a mission to get revenge for the accidental death of his niece. Set in an alternative version of modern Chicago, Watch Dogs has already become notorious for using hacking as a game play device. Watch Dogs can be played as both a single player as well as multiplayer game, though none of the multiplayer modes are accessible right from the get go. Before you can start to play against others,…

After an endless wait, Ubisoft’s open world contender, “Watch Dogs” has finally arrived.  The question on everyone’s mind is of course, was it worth the wait?  In truth, WD has been garnering positive, but somewhat mixed reviews, with a lot of critics seemingly unable to get past the fact that it isn’t Grand Theft Auto 6.   Say what you will, but this game is something of a technical marvel and is jam-packed with enough content and nuance to satisfy even the most jaded gamer. At its core Watch Dogs really explores two main concepts, story-wise – one, it’s a revenge…

MachineGames recently released Wolfenstein: The New Order, bringing U.S. Captain William “B.J.” Blazkowitz back for some more Nazi-killing action in a world where the Allies lost the Second World War and the National Socialist Party controls every nation. The game is available on a number of different platforms, including PC, Xbox One and Xbox 360, as well as PS3 and PS4. PS4 Wolfenstein players have been very impressed with the smooth play of the game, aside from a few graphic glitches. Though the storyline is similar on all of the other platforms, depending on what choices you make, the play…

U.S. Captain William “B.J.” Blazkowitz returns in Wolfenstein: The New Order to do what he was born to do: kill Nazis. The game takes place after Blazkowitz attempted to topple the Nazi regime in the 2009 Wolfenstein, but failed. In The New Order, our protagonist wakes up in a Polish mental institution 14 years later in a world ruled by Nazis. What players have appreciated the most about his return is that the character still remains true to his personality from the previous games—nothing about how he perceives the world and his missions has changed. More importantly, the game is…

In this age of “more is always better” modern gaming it’s not hard to see why some developers have turned their attention away from conventional approaches, even perhaps looking to the past for inspiration.  In short, Polytron Corporation’s “FEZ” is along these lines – it possessing a distinctive “retro” sort of flavor but being informed by everything / anything contemporary. First off, you have your token lovable, fez-clad character (Gomez) that is thrust into a familiar, yet entirely new world.  The impetus of the game stems from an event that takes place in Gomez’s world where the peaceful 2D environment…

Few series within the video game canon have touched the industry and gamers like the Metal Gear franchise has.  One might even say that it helped to fully establish the Sony brand of consoles, in addition to sparking the imaginations of future game developers worldwide.  Throughout it all however, the basic formula has remained the same – it all boils down to complex stories laid down in increments amidst very appealing level design in the context of excellent stealth-based gameplay.   Pretty much every game in the series follows this basic format, with few exceptions. Technically speaking, the franchise emerged on…

Inexplicably, backgammon aficionados (who own a PS4) have been handed a gift in the form of VooFoo Studios’ “Backgammon Blitz”.   With virtually no offerings (currently) available when it comes to card and tabletop games, it’s somewhat surprising that a game like this would suddenly emerge.  Clearly it’s not a title designed for everyone, although it is a game that nearly anyone could easily pick up and learn to play.  Whether you’re a seasoned veteran and expert or someone who’s only recently discovered this most ancient diversion, the PlayStation 4 is an excellent platform for hosting matches.  In fact, one might…

Let’s face it, some games are simply singled out to be held up and made an example out of – such is the case with developer Spiders’ “Bound by Flame”.  Recently released, this title is taking a whipping from critics, many of which are absolutely tearing it apart limb from limb.  However, if you look a bit more closely you’ll discover a game that’s actually not nearly as terrible as they make it out to be, in fact, one might even say that it accomplishes exactly what it set out to do in the first place. First off, BbF is…

Today we had the fantastic news that Far Cry 4 would be available later this year on PS4. However, like with many things, with good news follows bad news, and this is the case today. Tom Clancy’s The Division is shaping up to be a potentially amazing game and was set for release this Christmas. The release has now been pushed back until 2015. Ubisoft Massive made it clear that they didn’t want to rush the game, it’s a title they want to put as much detail in as possible. “Working on The Division is a once in a lifetime…

Tossing out labels like “worst” or “most disappointing” is always dangerous, especially in the video game world.  Obviously, regardless of how well a title is received, any sort of game developed for a major console such as the PS4 requires a lot of effort and creativity.  Nevertheless, some offerings perform much better than others and some still seem to miss the mark with their intended audience.  Of course at the end of the day it all boils down to taste, doesn’t it?  Some might feel that a “terrible” game is actually quite good and vice-versa. Often times we try to…

“A Realm Reborn” presents a clear example of how developers can save face in the event of a disastrous release.  Square Enix isn’t known for making big blunders; after all, we’re talking about a company that has produced one big smash after another for decades.  Needless to say, this latest iteration of Final Fantasy XIV is exactly what the doctor ordered, as they say.  Fans of the franchise are delighted as are those who might have only recently discovered the series.  Nevertheless, as with any deep RPG, there is often a bit of a learning curve to deal with.  Assuming…

There’s no disputing the bizarreness of the Octodad series. Even though it might first appear to be some type of standard, yet slightly off-kilter 3rd person game, there’s a definite originality that becomes patently obvious the more you play. For all intents and purposes, you play as Octodad – an octopus that’s just trying to maintain their suburban life, replete with all the usual tasks and errands one would expect to encounter. Of course as a sea creature, it’s safe to say that you’re a bit like a fish out of water at times. Even simple things like walking become…
