Halloween may be over for the year, but that doesn’t mean that we need to stop playing horror-themed games. Last month the so-called reverse horror game Carrion finally dropped on the PS4 after more than a year of waiting, and the consensus is that it was worth the wait. In this arcade-inspired title from Polish indie developers Phobia Game Studio, the player takes on the role of the tentacled blob trying to destroy everything in its path.
Although it may tap into our nostalgia with its 8-bit appearance, in reality Carrion is graphically far superior. The game physics are outstanding, as the creature slides, sticks, slithers and lashes its tentacles unrestrained by gravity. Although light on plot and possibly slightly repetitive at times, Carrion is a great addition to the horror genre. In honour of the release, we look back at some of the scariest games ever on PS4.
Visage (2020)
This game may be the closest we ever get to the legendary cancelled P.T. Silent Hills title that failed to materialise in 2015. Bankrolled by a crowdfunding campaign, Visage takes more than just inspiration from the halted Hideo Kojima/Guillermo del Toro collaboration. It is an attempt to faithfully recreate PT in a full-length format, and it succeeds where others have failed.
Visage is genuinely unsettling and at times terrifying. Set in a creepy abandoned house, this paranormal fright-fest is for true horror fans only. The game is divided into four non-linear chapters, each featuring a different character. Among the frights are puzzles to solve, and the atmosphere is unnerving throughout.
Resident Evil 2 (2019)
Zombies were so overplayed for a while that they were in danger of losing their fear factor. All that changed 1n 2019 when Capcom released their remake of the 1998 classic. The survival horror gaming genre has never been scarier, and zombies got their bite back. It took less than two years for the masterful remake to overtake sales of the original.
Keeping with the zombie horror theme, there are also plenty of scary games at the best online casinos, so for a change of pace you can also find the best online casinos Canada here. In fact, despite their overexposure zombies remain a popular trope across all kinds of entertainment media. Be warned though – the undead in Resident Evil 2 are about as frightening as they come.
Little Nightmares (2017)
Little Nightmares and its 2019 follow-up are quite unlike your average horror game. The tiny protagonists of this creepy single-player game must navigate a series of ghoulish locations beset with monsters in the form of distorted humans. It’s all very disturbing and sure to actually give you nightmares if you play for long enough. The second instalment of the game amplified the horror with a bleak storyline that also added depressing context to the original game.
Little Nightmares may not have the jump scares or the adrenaline rush sequences that some horror games provide, but it deserves a place in the PS4 horror game hall of fame. Few other games can manage to create the atmosphere of cold, creeping dread and existential terror that these two titles bring. Unfortunately, the future of the series is far from certain, with developers Tarsier Studios keen to move on to other projects. Publishers Bandai Namco want it to continue, so we will have to see whether a new studio can pick up the torch.
So there you have it, some of our favourite horror themed games for the PS4. Do you agree with our choices? What are your preferred scary titles? Let us know in the comments.
