Thanks to an eagle-eyed nosy gamer catching a glimpse of a careless developer’s open laptop on the Montreal subway earlier in 2017, we have known about Eidos Montreal’s next big game and the upcoming instalment to the Tomb Raider franchise for some time now. The third episode of the rebooted game from Square Enix, Shadow of the Tomb Raider has a tough task ahead if it is to live up to its predecessors. But after the success of the last two games, hopes are high for the new chapter of the Lara Croft adventure.
Hugely Popular Reboot
After a five year hiatus from the console games scene, Square Enix decided to start afresh with its hugely popular and successful Tomb Raider franchise and released Tomb Raider in 2013. The game featured a young Lara Croft embarking on her first ever exploration mission. The heroine and her crew found themselves washed up on a mysterious desert island and at the mercy of a twisted cult. Croft was not the battle-hardened survivor that gamers knew from previous games, and much of the adventure was about her using and developing her skills for the first time. This was done superbly because the player grew into the character as she progressed to higher levels of expertise. The game was met with critical acclaim and earned a score of 9.1/10 on IGN.
Key Features to Include
The latest Tomb Raider game has been compared to Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End countless times, and it’s hard to choose a winner of the two titles. The Nathan Drake adventure does have perhaps the stronger storyline, though, and also includes rich and entertaining characters with excellent dialogue. These are points that the makers of Shadow of the Tomb Raider may look to improve upon. Players would also like to see a return of Lara Croft’s house, something that was a fan favourite in the old games. In the past, the house was a great option to test out Lara’s skills and also a fun respite from the main story.
Square Enix have not yet officially announced Shadow of the Tomb Raider, so not much is known about the game just yet. It will probably be at least another year until the third instalment of the reboot is released, but judging by the high quality of the previous two, gamers should be expecting another excellent offering.
