If you’re eagerly awaiting the first flush of spring, February can feel like the final hurdle before the weather finally starts to improve.
In many places, it’s the last month during which darkness feels like it falls too early (for some, at least), and it’s also the month just before the big spring movie releases start to land.
In the gaming world, February can often play host to some pretty significant titles; it’s not always the case that major tentpole releases land in February, but this year, you’ve certainly got more than enough choice as a PS4 gamer.
Here are the best PS4 games to check out in February 2024.
Granblue Fantasy: Relink (February 1st)
This one’s been a long time in the making, so it’s good to see Cygames’ project finally come to fruition.
Granblue Fantasy: Relink is an action-RPG set in the Granblue Fantasy universe, which also encompasses the mobile gacha RPG Granblue Fantasy and the fighting game Granblue Fantasy Versus.
There’s a pleasantly PlayStation 3 vibe to this game, although its rolling verdant meadows and breathtaking anime vistas would probably beg to differ.
If you love well-executed action-RPG combat and traditionalist anime-inspired storytelling, then Granblue Fantasy: Relink is definitely one to check out.
Jujutsu Kaisen Cursed Clash (February 2nd)
Given how massively popular the Jujutsu Kaisen franchise is, it was only a matter of time before the first major video game based on the property was released.
Cursed Clash is a two-on-two fighting game that revolves heavily around building synergies between team members and finding that crucial combo that gives you the edge.
It features many hugely popular characters from the manga and anime, including Yuji Itadori, Nobara Kugisaki, and Megumi Fushiguro, so hopefully, your favourite character is present and correct here.
Even if you’re not a fan of the series, you may well find exactly the kind of over-the-top fighting action you’re looking for here.
Persona 3 Reload (February 2nd)
It feels like Persona fans have been clamouring for a Persona 3 remake for many a year, so the fact that Atlus has finally acquiesced feels like a blessing.
This reworked version of the cult classic RPG updates the original’s visuals and introduces many much-needed quality-of-life improvements, but it’s still the same story at its core.
Unfortunately, Persona 3 Reload doesn’t include any of the extra content introduced in Persona 3 FES on PS2, nor does it allow you to play as the female protagonist from the PSP remaster of the game.
However, it’s arguably the best way to experience the core story of Persona 3 right now, so check it out if you’re a franchise convert.
Tomb Raider 1-3 Remastered (February 14th)
Just in time for Valentine’s Day, here are three remasters of the first three stone-cold classics in the long-running and much-loved Tomb Raider series.
Porting studio Aspyr looks to have done some rock-solid work in bringing these classics to a new generation; the controls and mechanics have been left largely untouched, but the visuals have been modernised significantly.
Each of these adventures takes gaming icon Lara Croft to new far-flung reaches of the globe, usually in search of a priceless artifact to add to her growing collection.
If you thought the recent Tomb Raider reboots leant a touch too heavily on the “gritty” setting, then these remasters are for you.
Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate – Daemonhunters (February 20th)
Do you love XCOM? Are you a big fan of turn-based strategy games in which every character looks like they’re wearing an entire appliance shop on their body?
If you answered yes to both of those questions, then Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate – Daemonhunters was absolutely made for you, unwieldy title and all.
It has you playing as the Grey Knights, a chapter of the Emperor’s Space Marines tasked with eradicating daemons from the reality-skewing Warp.
You’ll need to engage in turn-based tactical battles with more than a touch of Firaxis’ 2012 XCOM reboot about them, but there are a number of exciting additions and tweaks to the formula that make Daemonhunters stand out.
Slave Zero X (February 21st)
If you were a PC gamer (or, indeed, if you owned a Dreamcast) back in the late 90s, then you may well have come across a little-known gem by the name of Slave Zero.
A third-person shooter set in the distant future, Slave Zero saw you taking control of a cybernetic warrior aiming to dethrone the sinister Lu Chen and save the world.
Slave Zero X takes place in the same world, but it eschews the third-person shooter gameplay of its predecessor, opting instead for a side-scrolling perspective that emphasises flashy combos and lightning-fast combat.
If you’re a fan of games like Devil May Cry or Bayonetta, then this will be right up your, uh, cyber-alley.
Star Wars: Dark Forces Remaster (February 28th)
Star Wars: Dark Forces is one of the most underrated classic shooters of all time. It originally launched in 1995, during a time when first-person shooters were nowhere near as ubiquitous as they are now.
The game bears more than a passing resemblance to id Software’s classic Doom, although the Star Wars theming and range of more creative weaponry helps it to stand out.
There’s also a surprisingly rich narrative to enjoy; Dark Forces is a prequel to the original Star Wars and follows Rebel mercenary Kyle Katarn as he uncovers a dastardly Imperial secret.
Naturally, Dark Forces bears more than a few crow’s feet by modern standards, but Nightdive is a reliable workhorse when it comes to remasters, so we’re optimistic.
