Will GTA 6 Be on PS4?
The complete guide to Grand Theft Auto VI and PlayStation 4 compatibility. Technical reasons, release details, screenshots, trailer, and upgrade options for PS4 owners.
The Short Answer: No
Grand Theft Auto VI is NOT coming to PS4. The game launches on November 19, 2026 exclusively on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. There will be no PS4 version - not at launch, not later, not ever.
This is the first time in Grand Theft Auto history that a mainline game has completely skipped the previous console generation. GTA V shipped on PS3 and Xbox 360 before moving to PS4 and Xbox One. GTA 6 is built from the ground up for current-generation hardware and cannot be scaled down to PS4.

Why GTA 6 Cannot Run on PS4
The reasons GTA 6 is not coming to PS4 are not about marketing or exclusivity deals - they are fundamentally technical. The PS4 released in 2013 and will be 13 years old when GTA 6 launches. Rockstar has built GTA 6 around hardware capabilities that the PS4 simply does not have.
Storage Speed - NVMe SSD Required
GTA 6 uses continuous asset streaming to render the massive open world of Leonida in real-time. The PS5's custom NVMe SSD can stream data at 5.5 GB/s, while the PS4's mechanical hard drive manages only around 100 MB/s. That is a 55x difference. The PS4's HDD simply cannot feed data fast enough to keep up with the game's streaming demands, which would result in constant pop-in, stuttering, and loading screens.
CPU Power - NPC Simulation Needs
GTA 6 features unprecedented NPC density, with each pedestrian having individual AI routines, daily schedules, and reactive behaviors. The PS4's AMD Jaguar CPU (8 cores at 1.6 GHz) is a budget laptop-class processor from 2013. The PS5's custom AMD Zen 2 CPU is dramatically more powerful. Rockstar has a dedicated team focused solely on pedestrian behavior - the PS4 CPU cannot simulate this level of complexity.
RAM Limitations
The PS4 has 8 GB of GDDR5 RAM shared between the CPU and GPU. The PS5 has 16 GB of GDDR6 RAM with significantly higher bandwidth. GTA 6's world of Leonida requires far more memory for textures, NPC data, physics simulations, and weather systems than the PS4 can provide. Running out of RAM would cause crashes, not just lower quality.
GPU and Visual Fidelity
GTA 6 targets 4K resolution with advanced lighting, ray tracing, and incredibly detailed character models. The PS4's GPU (1.84 TFLOPS) cannot approach the visual quality shown in the trailers. Even the PS4 Pro (4.2 TFLOPS) falls far short of the PS5's 10.28 TFLOPS. The level of detail in GTA 6 - from individual pores on character faces to dynamic water physics - requires current-generation GPU power.
Key difference from GTA V: GTA V was built for the PS3/360 generation and then ported UP to PS4/Xbox One. GTA 6 is built from the ground up for PS5/Xbox Series X|S. A downport would not be a patch or optimization - it would require building an entirely different, significantly worse game. Rockstar has shown zero interest in doing that.
GTA Release History: A Pattern Breaker
Every previous Grand Theft Auto game shipped on the previous console generation before moving to newer hardware. GTA 6 breaks this pattern entirely - it is the first mainline GTA to completely skip the previous generation.
| Game | Release | Platforms |
|---|---|---|
| GTA III | 2001 | PS2, Xbox, PC |
| GTA: Vice City | 2002 | PS2, Xbox, PC |
| GTA: San Andreas | 2004 | PS2, Xbox, PC |
| GTA IV | 2008 | PS3, Xbox 360, PC |
| GTA V | 2013 | PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PC |
| GTA VI | 2026 | PS5, Xbox Series X|S |

Frequently Asked Questions
Will GTA 6 ever come to PS4?
No. GTA 6 will not come to PS4 or PS4 Pro, not at launch and not later. Rockstar has built the game from the ground up for current-generation hardware (PS5 and Xbox Series X|S). The PS4's mechanical hard drive, aging CPU, and limited RAM make it technically impossible to run the game as designed. This is the first time in GTA history that a mainline game has completely skipped the previous console generation.
Why can't the PS4 run GTA 6?
Three main hardware bottlenecks make it impossible: (1) Storage - GTA 6 requires NVMe SSD speeds for continuous world streaming, and the PS4's mechanical HDD is 55x slower. (2) CPU - The PS4's AMD Jaguar CPU cannot handle the NPC simulation, AI, and physics complexity. (3) RAM - The PS4's 8 GB of RAM is insufficient for the massive world of Leonida. Even the PS4 Pro with its upgraded GPU still has the same CPU and HDD limitations.
When does GTA 6 come out?
Grand Theft Auto VI releases on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The game was originally targeting Fall 2025, then May 2026, before settling on the November 2026 date. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has confirmed there will be no further delays. Pre-loading begins November 12, 2026.
How much does GTA 6 cost?
The standard edition of GTA 6 costs $79.99. An Ultimate Edition is also available with exclusive vehicles, weapons, apparel, and bonus content. Pre-orders opened on June 25, 2026. Physical copies will contain a download code inside the box rather than an actual game disc.
Will GTA 6 come to PC?
GTA 6 has not been announced for PC at launch. However, based on Rockstar's historical pattern, a PC version is likely 12-18 months after the console release. GTA V came to PC about 18 months after its PS3/360 launch, and Red Dead Redemption 2 came to PC over a year after its console release. This puts the estimated PC release in late 2027 or early 2028.
Is Sony emailing PS4 owners about GTA 6?
Yes. Sony has started emailing PS4 users who wishlisted GTA 6 on the PlayStation Store, encouraging them to upgrade to PS5 before the game's launch. This is an unusually direct acknowledgment from Sony that GTA 6 is not coming to PS4 and that PS4 owners need to upgrade to play it.
Can I play GTA 5 on PS4 while waiting for GTA 6?
Yes. GTA V is fully playable on PS4 and remains one of the best-selling games on the platform. While it is not the same experience as GTA 6, it offers an enormous open world, excellent story mode, and GTA Online multiplayer. GTA V on PS4 is a great way to pass the time while saving up for a PS5.
Will there be GTA Online in GTA 6 at launch?
Rockstar has not confirmed GTA Online for GTA 6 at launch. The initial release focuses on the single-player experience featuring Jason and Lucia. Online multiplayer components are expected to be added later, though details have not been officially announced.
