The horror genre of video games has steadily increased in popularity over the last several years. The truth is, we like to be scared, and evolving from the popularity of horror films, scary video games have emerged as another form of media to keep gamers on their toes. We love the thrill that the horror genre provides, which is why Halloween is the best time to indulge in horror-based gameplay.

With the PS4 having the best selection of horror games as an 8th gen console, Halloween is a fantastic time to enjoy the great horror game catalogue as a PS4 gamer. After all, there's nothing better than to get involved with some of the scariest games available. Here are 10 titles you won’t want to miss checking out this Halloween! Alien Isolation

The Alien franchise has been scaring people for over 30 years. It is only natural that a horror-based video game would evolve from it. Featuring action, adventure, and science fiction elements, gameplay for Alien Isolation is based on stealth and survival.  Players control protagonist, Amanda Ripley, the daughter of Ellen, to explore a station teeming with human enemies, androids, and an alien you must evade, because you cannot defeat it.

The Order: 1886

The selling point of this game is its stunning graphics. While there are strong elements of horror, the scariness is in how well they translate visually. This third-person action-adventure, shooter game has players following a set, linear story as the protagonist, Galahad, a Knight of the Order. As Galahad, you will defeat a selection of humans and werewolves using a variety of guns. Set in London, in an alternate Earth, the goal is to defeat the werewolves, and keep the world safe from these half-breed wolf-like creatures.

Outlast

One of the creepiest places happens to be old asylums. Taking place in an out-of-the-way psychiatric hospital, players control an investigative journalist, Miles Upshur, who wishes to find out the secrets of the asylum. Confronted by a crazy priest, sadistic patients, and a true horror developed by nano-technology, there is no way to fight back against the enemies that attack. Using stealth, the environment, and evasion, the hope of getting Miles out alive continues to dwindle with each passing second.

Resident Evil Revelations 2

Told in episodes, Resident Evil Revelations 2 is a survival horror game. Claire Redfield returns as the main protagonist. She is joined by Moira Burton, the daughter of Barry, as the two work together at a biohazard prevention agency. After being kidnapped, the two women are taken to a remote island. There they must find a way to call for help, which brings Barry to the island. Joined with the young girl, Natalia, who has supernatural abilities, it is not long before he realizes the call he received was made months ago. The two must discover what happened to Moira and Claire before whatever it is, gets them, too.

Dying Light

The first person survival horror game, Dying Light, takes place in an open world.  Players control an undercover agent, Kyle Crane. He has been sent in to infiltrate a zone in the city of Harran, which has been quarantined because it has been taken over by zombies. Kyle must receive a file, which has been stolen by Kadir Suleiman, who is blackmailing the Global Relief Effort from within the quarantine zone. Players follow a single player and multiplayer story, using parkour and weapons to kill and evade as many of the infected, as they can.

The Evil Within

This game will mess with your mind. The psychological thriller is a third person survival horror game. You control Sebastian Castellanos, through a single player story that moves through horrific locations. As Sebastian, players battle horrific creatures using guns and melee weapons. The game also involves the usage of stealth, to avoid certain horrific and deadly situations. The veteran police officer is aided by fellow officers as they take on the evil force known as Ruvik.

The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth

This game just goes to show that it doesn’t have to have the fanciest graphics to be a great PS4 title. Based on the original game of the same name, The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth is a top down dungeon crawler, and like its predecessor, it features 2-D graphics. The protagonist is a child named Isaac, who you control as he explores the dungeons inside his basement (in his mother’s house). Players take on a series of boss fights and travel to other locations including the Necropolis and, creepily enough, even his mother’s womb.

SOMA

There’s nothing scarier than being unable to leave a place, especially in a survival horror game. This science fiction thriller takes place in the underwater research facility known as PATHOS-2. The game has just been released, and it is getting rave reviews, with good reason. The last surviving scientists, stuck underground when the earth is devastated by a comet collision, must maintain their survival while dealing with the psychological horror of the machines they interact with taking on human characteristics. The protagonist, Simon Jarret, must battle AI and find a way to escape.

Bloodborne

You play as the Hunter in this Gothic, action role-play game, which allows players to explore a single player story, as well as the option of multiplayer.  He wakes up in the derelict city of Yharnam, which is infested by inhabitants that are blood born beasts. The Hunter must fight these horrific elements on his quest to find the Paleblood. Gameplay is horrifically brutal, but well worth it for the most devoted of horror fans.

Until Dawn

This dramatic, cinematic, and interactive survival horror game has consistently been ranked one of the greatest PlayStation 4 horror games. Until Dawn allows for players to discover new things every time this single player horror game is played through.  Gameplay is cause-and-effect, with game choices affecting the player later in the game. When 10 friends head out on a mountain getaway, it ends in tragedy when two fall to their deaths. One year later, the eight remaining friends return to the site to memorialize them, and they quickly realize they are not alone. Soon they discover the their friends’ deaths may not be an accident, and the stranger that is following them is  deadly.
