If you’re occasionally given to a bit of a flutter, chances are you’ve visited an online casino or two in your day. It doesn’t matter what your game is; whether it’s poker, blackjack or roulette, the Internet is the perfect place to sharpen your gambling skills and face off against opponents who’ll give you a real challenge.
You might not quite be ready to step into the world of real-money casino gambling, though. If you’re not, don’t worry – there’s plenty of opportunities to experience a real Vegas-style casino environment from the comfort of your own home thanks to your PS4. Let’s have a look at some of the poker games currently available for the console, and weigh up their relative merits.
Prominence Poker
Okay, so if you’re after the glitzy glamour of high-roller poker, this one might not be for you. Prominence Poker casts players as a new arrival in a seedy town, looking to wrest control from its shadowy Mayor and his corrupt goons. The unique narrative spin is what gives this one specific appeal, but Prominence Poker also offers a darn good game of poker. With stylish visuals, a surprisingly detailed backstory and full online multiplayer functionality, this is definitely one to check out if you can’t – or won’t – make it to a casino. Oh yeah – this one’s free to play, too. You’re welcome.
Poker Night 2
This one’s cheating very slightly, because it’s not so much about the poker as it is about the characters. Poker Night and its sequel remain Telltale’s most interesting experiment, despite all their forays into point-and-click adventure games. The premise is thus: a bunch of characters from popular video games, TV shows and other media get together to play a round of poker, discuss their respective lives and have a right laugh. Expect such luminaries as Borderlands’ Claptrap, Brock Samson of Venture Bros fame and insane Portal overlord GLaDOS as your dealer. Not quite as perfect a poker sim as some of the others on this list, but fun nonetheless.
Pure Hold’em World Poker Championship
Sometimes, straightforward is best. Pure Hold’em World Poker Championship boasts perhaps the most one-to-one simulation of casino poker available on your PS4. Starting as a lowly chancer on the Jokers table, you’ll work your way up to VIP penthouse glory by playing round after round of (rather glorious-looking) poker. Enjoy all the excitement of an online casino without worrying about whether you’re going to lose real money. Unfortunately, if that is the thrill you’re after, you won’t be able to gamble for real on your PS4 – you’ll need to visit a reputable online casino to do that.
The Four Kings Casino and Slots
The Four Kings Casino and Slots offers much more than just a regular game of poker (though that is definitely on the cards too – on the cards, see what we did there?). There’s no better game on PS4 if you’re after a full, immersive casino experience. In The Four Kings Casino and Slots, players can create their own avatar, which they’ll use to socialise with other players currently playing the game. A wide range of traditional casino games can be enjoyed, including (of course) Texas hold’em poker. If you’re not in a cards kinda mood, though, there’s also blackjack, roulette, bingo and more. The Four Kings Casino and Slots is probably about as close to a real casino as you’ll get without leaving your couch.
Your PS4’s Browser
None of the above tickle your fancy? Not to worry – your PS4’s online browser is more than equipped to handle most online casino experiences, so if you’ve got a favourite, your ol’ Sony faithful will more than suffice. You might find the interface slightly more clunky than on a PC, but who knows – maybe the unusual browser control scheme will net you a nifty advantage!
